Streetcar rail grinding maintenance
Rail grinding maintenance on Broadview Avenue - August 14 and 15
What are we doing and why?
As part of its streetcar track maintenance program and state of good repair, TTC will be conducting rail grinding along a number of sections of its streetcar network that have developed some rail roughness.
On August 14 and 15, a crew will resume rail grinding along the section of Broadview Avenue between Wolfrey Avenue and Langley Avenue, as shown in the map. The work will be conducted in both directions over a period of two nights.
The TTC has a contracted service to perform the rail grinding. This work is intended to improve the current condition of the rail surface that will aid in reducing noise and vibration levels, extend the life of the rail and provide a smoother streetcar operation through those areas.
To ensure that this grinding operation is carried out to its optimum potential, the slow moving rail-grinding unit will begin operations from approximately 9 p.m. nightly and will continue until approximately 6 a.m.
A street sweeper will be used to clean the track area each day immediately following rail grinding operations.
On-street parking and traffic
While work will be contained in the streetcar track lanes, street parking will be restricted through the moving work zone in order to maintain traffic flow.
Toronto Police Services personnel will be on-site each night to assist with traffic flow at the intersections within the moving work zones.
- 504 King Streetcar service will be maintained through the work area. TTC Operations staff will be onsite monitoring service.
- 505 Dundas buses are currently operating on this route.
Thank you for your patience as we carry out this maintenance work to improve the condition of the rail.
